...but I actually enjoyed this new Star Trek movie.
Stay tuned for the next sign of the apocalypse.
I think the first step was that they managed to pull the stick out of Star Trek's ass. I'm not sure how to put it other than that; I felt it was more accessible than the original series, than any of the Trek series.
I noticed that the phasers had somehow morphed into blasters, at least in terms of how they functioned; as a die-hard Warsie, that amused me.
About the only thing I didn't like was that all the action scenes were filmed in EXTREME CLOSE-UP!!!™. I kept wanting to shout, "You're not a Michael Bay movie! Zoom the fuck out!"
If Star Trek had been like THAT from the beginning, they might have made a Trekkie out of me instead of me hating Trek for so many years. I find myself actually hoping that they make a sequel.
Just sayin'.

Just sayin'. If they had done this in the beginning, they wouldn't have such a die-hard fanbase right now.
I plan on watching it soon.
Not gonna bother again. Someone deleted my previous account...somehow.

I'm not sure that's true; if they'd done this from the beginning, I think their fanbase might be larger and more general...
Seriously, this movie is Star Trek's Firefly. I'm just sayin'...

Look at this from my perspective. Look at the video game industry.
They usually start with an absolutely stellar game, but then people hear about it, and a big publisher gets in on the action.
The sequel becomes more "mainstream", and much more average/sub-average. Usually. Not always, but usually.
The same is often true for movies and television shows. But in "the beginning", the show had a tiny budget and was made in the 70's.

The new phasers look like what I image the Siren's weapons look like in real-time: laser Gatling guns.

The same is often true for movies and television shows. But in "the beginning", the show had a tiny budget and was made in the 70's. Actually the original series was made in the 60's, although it did achieve a fair bit of popularity in the 70's in syndication. That was what lead to the first Star Trek movie.
The two main things that distinguish Star Trek are that it is "hard" Science Fiction (as opposed to the "Space Opera" of a series like Star Wars) and it's optimistic view of the future (as opposed to more dystopian films like Blade Runner).
While the new Star Trek does a lot that would appeal to a more general audience, ala this piece from the Onion:
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocom ... able-.html
The fact is that Star Trek has been around for many decades now, and the Trek of 60/70's is going to be different from the Trek of the 80's which is going to be different from the Trek of the 90's. It's silly to say "if they had done this in the beginning, since this is the beginning. Or at least a new beginning.
KEM "I can still taste the Yak" -- Dawn, Buffy Season 8 KEMart is back online, although still something of a work in progress.
